On Saturday afternoon department members and invited guests gathered at the station to celebrate our 75th Anniversary. This ceremony is happening just prior to the date of the very first business meeting held March 28, 1949.
The day started with an opening welcome from Asst. Chief George Hayden. County Fire Chief C.P. Miedzinski was the master of ceremonies for the event. Southern Maryland Asst. Chaplain and Retired NDW Regional Fire Chief George Kennett was the guest speaker. George highlighted several historical events involving the department and its members. Asst. Chief Hayden then introduced the members along with Past Chiefs and Life Members.
Secretary Heather Bean then read the minutes from the very first business meeting. These minutes listed each and every member who joined along with those associate members who assisted with the creation of the department. The Commissioners of St. Mary's County presented a proclamation to the department and also presented one on behalf of Senator Bailey.
Chief Nelson then provided remarks and highlighted achievements of the department over the last 75 years. He provided details of accomplishments of each Fire Chief during their tenure. President Nelson then provided remarks and thanks for all those who took part in organizing the celebration.
The ceremony ended with a closing prayer by Chaplain Phetteplace. We would like to thank Bailey's Catering for serving the food. We would also like to thank Mechanicsville VFD for providing a fill in crew during the event.
In addition to this event we are planning a summer open house for the community to continue to celebrate this significant milestone in our history. |
